In Revelation 12:11 NASB John wrote 11 And they overcame him because of the blood of the Lamb and because of the word (logos) of their testimony, and they did not love their life, even to death”. The AMP translation reads 11 And they have overcome (conquered) him by means of the blood of the Lamb and by the utterance of their testimony,. The word utterance means the act of uttering words; pronunciation; manner of speaking; as a good or bad utterance.
The word testimony comes from the Greek word (marturia), which means to witness, or give record of, or to give a report of the truth about anything, specifically in the bible, referring to Jesus Christ and His doctrines, or the truth of His missions and The Gospel. We all have a testimony about Jesus Christ, and that moment we embraced Him as Lord and Savior, trusting in His blood, His sacrifice on the cross, as our only means of salvation.
Through the account below, we can see the importance of our individual testimony and how we can apply it to our lives today. Don’t view your testimony as a small thing, or as unimportant. It may be your testimony that you share with someone, or that someone reads, and it may minister to them, and help them to overcome in their particular situation. And by doing so, more people will hear The Gospel, and come to know Jesus Christ, and what happened in His death, burial, and resurrection.
All Thy works shall give thanks
to Thee, O Lord, and Thy godly
ones shall bless Thee.
Psalm 145:10
One of my favorite accounts of how Jesus encouraged another to give testimony, is found in the Gospel of Luke, the story of when Jesus personally visited the Gerasene Demoniac.
Beginning in Luke 8:26-39 NASB, Luke wrote 26 Then they sailed to the country of the Gerasenes, which is opposite Galilee." 27 And when He came out onto the land, He was met by a man from the city who was possessed with demons; and who had not put on any clothing for a long time, and was not living in a house, but in the tombs. 28 Seeing Jesus, he cried out and fell before Him, and said in a loud voice, “What business do we have with each other, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg You, do not torment me.” 29 For He had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. For it had seized him many times; and he was bound with chains and shackles and kept under guard, and yet he would break his bonds and be driven by the demon into the desert. 30 And Jesus asked him, “What is your name?” And he said, “Legion”; for many demons had entered him. 31 They were imploring Him not to command them to go away into the abyss.
32 Now there was a herd of many swine feeding there on the mountain; and the demons implored Him to permit them to enter the swine. And He gave them permission. 33 And the demons came out of the man and entered the swine; and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and was drowned. 34 When the herdsmen saw what had happened, they ran away and reported it in the city and out in the country. 35 The people went out to see what had happened; and they came to Jesus, and found the man from whom the demons had gone out, sitting down at the feet of Jesus, clothed and in his right mind; and they became frightened.
36 Those who had seen it reported to them how the man who was demon-possessed had been made well. 37 And all the people of the country of the Gerasenes and the surrounding district asked Him to leave them, for they were gripped with great fear; and He got into a boat and returned. 38 But the man from whom the demons had gone out was begging Him that he might accompany Him; but He sent him away, saying, 39 “Return to your house and describe what great things God has done for you.” So he went away, proclaiming throughout the whole city what great things Jesus had done for him.
Now as we can see, the Gerasene Demoniacs testimony has now unfolded, but in verse 38 as Jesus was getting into the boat, the man who had been demon-possessed was begging Jesus that he might accompany Him. Luke 8:38-39 AMP says "But the man from whom the demons had gone out kept begging and praying that he might accompany Him and be with Him, but [Jesus] sent him away, saying 39 Return to your home, and recount [the story] of how many and great things God has done for you. And the man departed , proclaiming throughout the whole city how much Jesus had done for him."
A man once in bondage, now delivered, a man once unmanageable and untamable, now perfectly sane.
I believe that Jesus wanted to get this man saying something with his mouth, his testimony, the truth, a witness, the record of what Jesus, The Word (The Logos), the power of God had done in his life. Each person has their own life experiences, and their own experience with the Word (the Logos), just as the “one who had been controlled by the unclean spirits”, or “the man now clothed and in his right mind” shared his testimony about how Jesus Christ turned his situation around.
We would love to learn how God's Word (Logos) brought you to faith in Jesus Christ. What specific words or particular scriptures were preached unto you that brought you to faith in Jesus Christ, leading you to (being saved or born-again)? How has God's Word or (Logos) been a blessing in your life through (healing, miracles, deliverance, or restoration)? Every testimony is significant, and gives glory to God.
